MANSFIELD LIBRARY
The existing library was simple in its layout with regularly spaced shelving within a series of rectangular rooms. Small indentations in the front façade were creating limitations on how the shelves could be organised to house the book collection. With the assistance of a library collections expert and a thorough analysis of the existing building, a more organic layout of shelving and the introduction of a series of timber screens were used to reorientate the interior towards the generous windows and create a more open feel throughout.
The screens moderate noise and visual connectedness between back of house areas, serving areas and the children’s reading spaces in addition to providing additional opportunities for display. Abstracted trees incorporated into the screens, flooring that references stone and grass, and cloud lights create a forest within the entry and children’s areas.
Visitation and membership have increased significantly since reopening, demonstrating how valuable the library is to the Mansfield community.
